What are access control vestibules?

Access control vestibules is also known as a mantrap, security mantrap portal, airlock, or sally port.  It is a physical security access control system comprising a small space with two sets of interlocking doors.   Opening and closing of these doors are set up in a way that only one door is open at a time.  These doors are usually secured and may require a pin or a fob key.  This physical security was developed to prevent tailgating or piggybacking and to ensure only authorized personnel get through the security checkpoints.

Access control vestibules also have a check-in window for extra verification.  While mantrap may not necessarily have the check-in window, access control vestibules do.

This may not be feasible in a high traffic environment because it limits the number of individuals who can enter the controlled access points and it takes time to authorize physical access.  But it is a great security measure for a low traffic environment that requires a high level of physical security like a bank.
