What is CCTV?

CCTV or Close-circuit television is a visual deterrent to unauthorized entry.  It is placed at specific access points whether it is internal or external.  The signal is not openly transmitted meaning it is transmitted to a limited number of monitors.

CCTV can be analogue or digital.  Analog CCTVs are connected to a digital video recorder, which is then connected to a router or a monitor.  Digital or IP based CCTV on the other hand is connected to a switch first that is connected to multiple things from video recorder to a local PC.

This has multiple benefits, for example, analog requires separate connection for the power source for all the cameras while for digital CCTV, the power source will come from the switch.

While analog CCTV may be easier to learn, install, and maintain, it does not come with modern functions and it is not scalable.

Digital CCTVs are also wireless and can be installed anywhere.  Digital CCTVs also have higher resolution and come with motion detection and video analytics to provide useful data as well.

But the most advantageous aspect of digital CCTV is the ability to integrate with other modern tools.  For example, you can use it in conjunction with a Security Alarm System or access control system to aid personal identification for remote site entry control.
