What is Wi-Fi 7 and is it useful?

Qualcomm has recently released Wi-Fi 7 capabilities.  Key highlight for this technology is the capability to bring a 75% reduction in real-time latency, which will bring a lot of benefits to emerging technologies like AR and VR that require high throughput and low latency.  Qualcomm is the first one to release Wi-Fi 7.  It has tri and quad band Wi-Fi 7 configurations ranging from 10 to over 33 Gbps peak wireless capacity.

Wi-Fi 7 is also referred to as IEEE 802.11be, is the latest throughput wireless network that uses 3 bands.  It uses 2.4Ghz, 5Ghz, and 6Ghz frequency bands and uses latest processors to maximize overall capacity, decrease latency and increase speed.

Wi-Fi 7 truly opened up the extra 6Ghz band and expanded other bands.  These bands are broken into channels. The 2.4-GHz band comprises 11 channels of 20 megahertz (MHz) each. The 5-GHz band has 45 channels, but instead of being limited to a width of 20 MHz, they can combine to create 40-MHz or 80-MHz channels.  The 6-GHz band supports 60 channels.  While Wi-Fi 6E did provide 6GHz, it wasn’t effective and only channels that were 160 MHz wide. Wi-Fi 7 on the other hand supports channels that are up to 320 MHz wide. Simply put, Wi-Fi 7 will widen the channel, which means more data it can transmit.

Wi-Fi 7 devices and routers are projected to be released from 2023 to 2024.  Companies are already developing ways to leverage Wi-Fi 7.  It will provide better wireless experiences and will accelerate emerging technologies.

Biggest thing to highlight regarding Wi-Fi 7 is the Multi-Link Operation (MLO).  Other Wi-Fi standards establish a connection between two devices on a single band, but MLO can combine several frequencies across bands into a single connection.  It allows connection across two or more channels in different bands simultaneously. It can dynamically aggregate or alternate bands in order to mitigate disturbance to deliver that low latency.

Networking Pro 1620 is a Quad-band that offers 33.1 Gbps peak wireless capacity.  This is great for a big enterprise. Networking pro 1220 tri-band that offers 21.6Gbps is good for medium sized companies and SMB. Networking pro 820 and 620 are good for small companies. There are also the immersive home platforms, which are good for premium homes, prosumer, and gaming.
