Remote desktop protocol is the standard for connecting with remote desktop. RDP is frequently used by IT professionals to connect to a server and operate on the server as if it were a local client application. Support technicians also use it frequently to diagnose and repair desktop remotely. Think of it as having a remote control for toys far away.
RDP is a low-bandwidth protocol used to send mouse movements, keystrokes, and bitmap images of the screen to the client computer. It always uses network port 3389 and data is sent over TCP/IP. RDP encrypts all data since the connections are usually over the internet. To make it more secure, it is recommended to use VPN as well.
To use RDP, RDP software has to be installed and used to connect to the remote system that is also using the software. These days, RDP isn’t utilized as much and has decreased in usage due to cloud computing.
