People these days don’t get enough sleep due to numerous factors like work and technology. Just health alone, we got depression, obesity, sleep apnea, teeth grinding, narcolepsy, substance abuse, chronic fatigue syndrome, and such that affects people’s ability to get quality sleep.
Lack of sleep can have numerous effects on the body to include
- Weaker immune system leading to more potential infections
- Hormonal imbalance which can cause numerous health issues like higher stress, lower fertility, weight gain, acne, and diabetes
- Weaker heart vessels which maintains blood pressure, sugar level, and inflammation
- Lower neurotransmitters, which are chemicals that help nerves communicate leading to lower brain functions
Minor symptoms can include fatigue, irritability, mood changes, lack of focus, and reduced sex drive, which can affect your ability to conduct certain activities safely like driving. More severe symptoms may include diabetes, obesity, heart attack, sleep apnea, stroke, psychosis, and depression.
There are many ways to support quality sleep, including counseling, lifestyle and environmental adjustments, medications, and alternative therapies. At times, a person needs treatment for the condition.
