If you are single and you eat out a lot, then this card may be for you. Note that this card have $250 annual fee, so you have to make sure you utilize it well, otherwise it’s not worth your time.
Amex gold provides you with 4X the points at restaurants, 4X the points on groceries, 3X the points on flights, and 1X on other eligible purchases. The card also gets you $120 a year in annual dining credit and $120 a year in uber cash that you can also use in uber eats. There are other benefits as well like hotel credits for qualifying activities like dining and spa, no foreign transaction fee, baggage insurance, trip delay reimbursement, and rental car insurance, but the card is known for eating out.
Other cards provides higher values in different categories like blue cash preferred for groceries with 6% cash back and sapphire reserve with its $300 annual travel credit, but Amex gold provides you the all-rounder option, providing you good benefit on multiple categories and less headache.
If you eat out and do your own grocery shopping, this will be a solid card to have, as long as you utilize it well. You also get 60,000 membership rewards points after you spend $4000 on eligible purchases with your new card within the first 6 months as well. Note that Amex express gold is a hybrid card like Amex platinum. I covered what traditional credit card, charge card, and hybrid are “here” if you want to read into it.
As for their point system, it is quite disappointing, unless you plan to use it for travel. This is because Amex redemptions are worth less than 1 cent per point for most options. But if you transfer them to a travel partner, which is the best ways to use Amex points, you’ll get better returns. For example, Amex points can be worth 1.3 cents each if you use it for delta miles. Many of Amex hotel or airline loyalty partners allow you to transfer points at a 1:1 rate and offer more than 1 cent per point in value on average.
