Swatch file is a color palette file that is used to store color values and is beneficial for maintaining color consistency throughout your design. It provides a consistent color scheme for various elements, meaning it ensures that same colors are used consistently across different assets and elements, which improves efficiency of the design process. Swatch files can be opened with adobe illustrator, adobe photoshop, GIMP palette, and other graphic art software.

To make it easier to understand, think of paint swatches. The little colored squares with details on cards at home depot or stores are called swatches. That’s essentially the swatches in the panel in programs like Adobe illustrator. Within the swatches panel, you can edit things like gradient, pattern, spot, tint, color, and much more. Custom swatches can be saved as ASE swatch files.
