Mesh vs Texture in graphic design

Mesh is the 3d structure of an object while texture is the image that goes over the structure. When you draw, you first start with an outline before adding any details. Mesh is basically the outline while texture is the details. Mesh will have .obj, .dae, or .fbx format while textures will have .jpg or .png. Mesh will show the topology and points of an object and texture will blend the object to make it look realistic.

Augmented reality uses mesh and texture as tracking assets. Mesh for example looks out for warping/contouring of the face. If you ever used make up effects on snapchat where it adds different textures on your face, it’s done by using these files as references. It’ll identify certain part of your body and replace it with different texture/effects.
