USB has become the hotspot for attackers because it’s used for numerous things.  You can use USB to connect the mouse and keyboards to execute commands, you can use USB to boot, and you can use USB to access information.  

This is why adversaries infect cables and charging ports to deliver malware, like at public charging ports.  Because USB makes it easy to deliver malware.  

So, how do you protect yourself against public charging stations?  To safeguard against this threat, it is recommended to have either your own charging bank or have a USB data blocker.  USB data blocker is made to protect information and prevent unauthorized entry.

A USB Data Blocker is a device that goes between a USB port and a device you need to charge that blocks data transmission over the data lines, but still allows charging.  How this works is quite simple, the USB data blocker blocks data pins so data can’t flow.  It only allows for charging.

Everytime you charge from an untrusted power source, you should use USB data blocker.

After purchase, you can check if it works by connecting your phone to your laptop or desktop.  If the phone icon isn’t searchable, then it works.

There’s not too much to look for when purchasing data blockers.  They all block data.  The only thing that will change are small additional functions like adding additional charging capabilities, design, durability and port types (type A and C).
